Vytenis Andriukaitis » European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety

Mr Vytenis Andriukaitis (63) is a surgeon and historian. Currently he is a Member of the Lithuanian parliament. Andriukaitis started his political career just after high school. From 1969 he was an active participant in the anti-Soviet underground and in 1976 took part in underground social democratic activities.

Ten years later he became Deputy Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP). At the same time, he has been evolving his medical skills and became a cardiovascular surgeon. Andriukaitis was co-author of the Act of Independence of the Republic of Lithuania of 11 March 1990.

From 2000 he has been a longstanding member of the Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs. He led the Lithuanian delegation at the Convention on the Future of Europe in 2002-2003.

During his speech at Lithuanian Health Forum 2013 he said that healthy people are more creative and productive. Their well-being sets the foundations that moves societies forwards. Health in all policies should be the driving force of our efforts to cut inequalities as it lays the groundwork for social justice and economic sustainability”.

In this speech at EPHA’s 5th Annual Conference, Mr Andriukaitis said “health is not a consequence of growth but also a condition for growth. Investments in public health increase productivity and boost job creation. Therefore health is not only a product of growth: health encourages growth.”

Vytenis Andriukaitis, has indicated that he could work not only as a health commissioner, but could also be active in other areas.
