During a meeting organised of the European Parliament Disability Intergroup, the Intergroup (composed of MEPs) announced it will consider a report on Violence against Women with Disabilities. MEPs also called for a Directive on male violence against women.
On 28 March, EPHA attended a hearing in the European Parliament (EP) organised by the European Disability Forum (EDF) and the EP Disability Intergroup. The meeting focused on the violence experienced by women with multiple disabilities, addressing approaches on how to prevent and treat this deplorable occurrence.
During the meeting, a series of announcements were made:
– Calls for an EP own-initiative report on Violence against Women with Disabilities, which the EP Disability Intergroup is currently considering.
– Fundamental Rights Agency survey on Gender-based violence against women – an EU-wide survey (results in 2013); Qualitative research on children and justice, focusing on children’s experience of harassment; Inequalities and multiple discrimination in healthcare (results in November 2012).
– A call for a directive on male violence against women, stressing that the existing initiatives (such as the European Protection Order and the victims’ rights package) are far from enough.
– UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights announced that a thematic analytical study on violence against women with disabilities is being prepared and will be shared with various stakeholders. The study will be made public in June 2012. It will contain recommendations to civil society, encouraging organisations to use it in their lobbying work.
