Smoke-free Ljubljana under threat? EPHA supports the Slovenian Coalition for Tobacco Control and Public Health campaign

EPHA supports the campaign of its member organisation, the Slovenian Coalition for Tobacco Control and Public Health, to change the name of a major construction project in Ljubljana that could threaten the country’s progress in the area of tobacco control.

Slovenia, a country known for its successful tobacco control (a ban on smoking in all public areas was introduced in 2007), is about to take a step back. A Slovenian engineering company dealing with complex construction types announced a new housing and business development project called ”Tobačna mesto Ljubljana” (Tobacco City Ljubljana). Although the project is to be realised in the vicinity of a former tobacco factory – and there is no known evidence of interference by the tobacco industry – it goes without saying that the name of the project is sending out the wrong signals.

To prevent the name of the project – and not the project itself – EPHA member the Slovenian Coalition for Tobacco Control and Public Health (SCTC) will send a letter to all relevant stakeholders in order to advocate for a change of name of this project, which could be one of the biggest mistakes that Ljubljana could make. The letter will include a list of all NGOs that support the withdrawal of the disputable name, as well as individual statements of support by European organisations.

EPHA’s letter of support.

If you would like to join us in supporting the SCTC campaign, please send your statements of support to nvo.zdravje@tobak-zveza.si. All contributions received will be attached to the SCTC’s letter and forwarded to the Ministry of Health of Slovenia (Health Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia), as well as to other relevant decision-makers.
