More money for health Aid better spent

The implementation of the “Paris Principles” on aid effectiveness is to be reviewed in September 2008 with the health sector taking a high profile as a key “tracer” sector. Action For Global Health has contributed to this assessment with its latest report “Healthy Aid” that includes 8 specific recommendations necessary for more aid to be better spent for health.

<img3103|right>On Wednesday morning 18 June, “Healthy Aid” (available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) was officially launched by the Action For Global Health Brussels partners at the UN Residence Palace in the heart of the European quarter in Brussels.

The “Paris Principles” on aid effectiveness are to be reviewed at the Third High Level forum on Aid Effectiveness in Accra in September 2008. The EU contribution to this was to be discussed at the European Council meeting the following day. This report outlines eight specific recommendations EU leaders should respond to at Accra and beyond.

At the launch event prior to the European Council meeting, being held in the wake of the Irish vote on the Lisbon treaty, Action For Global Health stressed the fact that EU leaders, despite the current internal political challenges, should not absolve themselves of their responsibilities to achieve the health MDGs.

Action For Global Health called on the European Council to demonstrate leadership in discussing the “EU Agenda for Action on the MDGs” so as to put back on track the EU’s contributions to aid for the most vulnerable in the world.

For more information see the launch story on the news page of Action for Global Health.

One week previously Action For Global Health had highlighted how far EU leaders had to go to achieve their commitmments to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. In an advert in the European Voice newspaper Action For Global Health had pointed out that the “Euro 2008 team are still missing our development goals”.
