First signatures on the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is open for signatures from 16 June 2003 on, and several countries have already signed the document.

Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner David Byrne and the Greek Council Presidency were among the first to sign the document in Geneva on behalf of the European Union.

As soon as 40 countries ratify the Convention, it will become law in those countries and for all other countries that sign thereafter. The FCTC requires ratification both from the Community and EU Member States.
