A European wide study funded by the European Commission will recommend a set of vital steps to tackle one of the most common contemporary health conditions affecting up to one in ten European citizens – Depression, known as “The Big Blue”.
Project Leaders will cite the need for “Appreciation, Benevolence and Commitment” at a Launch Reception in the European Parliament in Brussels at 13.00 on Tuesday July 8th.
For two years, experts from public, non-governmental and academic bodies from 20 countries have worked together in an innovative consortium to:
– Identify three key stages of life where depression is most marked: adolescents, working adults and older people
– Collect and analyse evidence of good practices
– Recommend a European Strategy to increase well being and reduce the cost burden on individuals and economies
Recommendations will include:
– Advising parents and schools to promote good mental health together
– Strengthening mental health promotion in occupational health schemes
– Increasing possibilities for independent living for older people
Catherine Stihler MEP (UK – PES) will launch the report, which will also be supported by John Bowis MEP and EC Health Commissioner David Byrne.
Mrs Stihler said: “It is very interesting that these proposals identify relatively straightforward ways to make an impact on The Big Blue – Depression and Anxiety – if there is sufficient political will, commitment and resources. I hope this report will help to stimulate real action across the EU where 40 million citizens are affected by this condition.”
